heyhey Big bad jonn Sure that a lot of people know you from the uk scene but to those who dont, Can you just introduce yourself to the uk Scene?
Of course. My names Jon Mangan, 18 years old going on 19. Im currently doing a BTEC National Diploma in software development then moving onto university to do a degree in web design and business infrastructure. Im working part time stacking shelves and on the tills which is the most depressing thing ever. I've recently started music production with a mate doing trance and progressing quite well as the process is longer than I thought and very expensive and most recently I've joined diZe to play dods with and prepare for zp lan #2 if we can things sorted.
Nice, Now, I understand that you've been gaming for a heck of a long time, however to the guys who didnt play 1.3 and the late starters in source, Can you give us a run down on you'r history throughout gaming?
I have been playing for years as most people know, barely anyone around from them days though. I first started back in march 2003 when I turned 12, I started playing dod 3.1b at an internet cafe then I downloaded it at home playing on 128k and it was actually alright. I then later got broadband when the first retail version of dod come out which was 1.0 and I started playing in ED where everyone starts and that's where I met s0x, some people will know him some might not but he joined my pubscrub team and we had some serious lulz until the WON servers got shutdown back in 2004. This was where steam was starting to takeover and 1.1 to 1.3 was released. I first started in a team called CWW in ED still and then I moved on to start playing more competitively. I had many teams as I was improving then I joined a team called [DBDUK] where I first spoke to RiN. We then played an official against a team called eXception which was where the awful scrubs as of today such as turtz and bAc were playing. We lost that game and in true so like bnzr ragequit fashion, I ragequit DBDUK, joined eXception vent and joined the team 5 minutes after the game, sorry jadski! This was where I met turtz and bac who I still speak to today 5 years later. I was in exception for about 5 months then there was an issue in the team which I left as it was just out of hand. I played for numerous other teams along the way but I started playing WoW, being the dork I am I was raiding 6-7 hours a night which I enjoyed but it took the piss commitment wise. I quit wow then joined Pressure with wallu, jaunty, ANTTIPANTII!1!! and ristous in the ranks. Once that died, 1.3 was on its way to compelte death but we made a site known as onepointthree.org and a few good players come back and we had a good 5-6 months of active 1.3 with teams as clutchmasterz, raw-gaming and gamegear. I only quit 1.3 in late 2008 after the last wave of semi decent teams stopped and I finally quit. I moved onto source and I always had a hatred for the game as I thought it was not the game it should have been. I've played it for about a year now and played in some decent teams, but I don't get the same amount of fun in source as I did in 1.3
Quite a list I See! Besides gaming ofc, Anything else that you are a fan off? I know you like your trance and hardcore
Yes as you found in vent, I like trance. Im a fan of trance production and sound engineering which has only been a latest interest as Ive just started getting studio equipment which is so expensive, I can only get 1 part a month. I go the gym about 3 or 4 times a week as part of me rebuilding my knee strength after I had a few things done to them after I injured myself. I mainly enjoy going to so called "rave's" to places such as godskitchen, ministry of sound, global gathering, creamfields etc, all the main dance festivals.
I Understand for quite a while now you've been talking about LANS and zP lan, A few months ago it was kwazq and now zP lan. Although you never went in the end to kwazq, What is attracting you to the prospect of a LAN in holland?
I didn't attend kwazq because the full LAN support wasn't there in iRage and only the entry fee could be paid for, plus I couldn't be arsed to take my PC over as its too much hassle. ZP LAN appealed to me the first time but I was jobless and couldn't afford it, this time round I can afford it and I've joined a team planning on going. I'll be more than likely going with the TLR guys by meeting them at Gatwick.
Within the uk scene at the moment, Who would you think are some of the most overrated and underrated players about and for what reasons, Any Players stand out there to you?
There are a few overrated and underrated players in every scene. The first overrated player is aKaaa . The most underrated player and this is because he is kind of overshadowed by the other big names like bourne, rin and LUK3 is turtz. This guys teamplay is second to none and I don't think he gets enough recognition for some of the stuff he does.
Are there any players that you feel are an Influence to you for source? Any that really helped you getting into the game?
I wouldn't say an influence but have helped me adjust are probably UWE because I aliased around for about a month playing for them in ED just to get used to the switchover then I moved onto SnoopY where I was playing rifle (my god that class is awful) which was where I started.
Getting back to 1.3, You've been around for a fair bit in the game playing for teams ranging for Pressure To the infamous Team UK, How would you compare the old 1.3 days to the current source era?
Most people know I prefer the 1.3 days because I just found it simply a lot better. The amount of teams, the competitions and just being part of it used to be epic. The source era that's going now seems to be stable but there are a few things that seem to be holding it back and of course the main one is Valve who won't fix the game and with the problems it has, it annoys most players and especially for me, I've lost motivation in this game so quickly I was surprised. The 1.3 days were pretty amazing but that's past now and this current source era could be on levels with it if Valve would fix the game, LAN's were more frequent and just the general advertisement of it improved after it seems call of duty seems to dominate it.
Bar gaming atm, Your a frequent visitor on a few Ventrillo servers, When your not gaming, Anyguys out there at the moment you feel you can just sit there for a few hours, have a banter, without having to talk about anysort of gaming?
There's plenty. The damage guys are hilarious to hang out with because the amount of random stuff that gets said is amusing. The TLR guys aswell as I've known most of them for years now, theres many things that are brought up and talked about.
Source, The game you love so much, Whats your favorite source team out there at the moment and for what reasons are
they?
You can guess it, its TLR. Main reason is that they somehow manage to have drama in every match they have with zP! Ranging from the summer cup grand final, to zP not scrimming them for months on end and they are awesome individuals except LUK3coon.
Anyway, A few members of the Uk scene Were Begging to ask a few questions To the infamous bnzr to i managed to get a few lined up to you
question from LUK3:
At what point did you feel you were at your 'gaming prime' and what players would you of compared yourself to in dods?
Its hard to say when I was at my gaming prime but I would have to say the late 2006 early 2007 era of 1.3 when we revived it majorly. Most people will say it was completely dead but have no judgement on the skill that was there when all the decent players came back for one last blast and the skill level was solid. I can't say if we could of matched the 2005 era but I think we werent far off, especially as clutchmasterz. I can't compare myself to anyone in dods as I haven't really played it for long enough to judge that yet.
question from turtz:
Who is the most influenial player you have played with, and why?
Its hard to say who was the most influential for me. There has been a few players from starting back in 2003 till now who have some impact on me playing and how far I've come.
question from mattiii:
Why do you think you rage 90% of the matches you play in?
I wouldn't say its that high, but it isn't far off. I just seem to get annoyed with the game most of the time but I'am not actually sure.
question from nBAD:
How do you feel the talent available for Team UK this year stands up to the likes of Ayanami, An1maL and Charlie of the 1.3 era?
Its kind of hard to say because Charlie was 3x as good as Ayanami. I would say An1maL, john` and Charlie from the 1.3 era. A ridiculous rifle, heavy and sniper are all in teamuk for source this round. Bourne being the rifle, RiN being the heavy and LUK3 is being the sniper. Especially LUK3 as he gets the same ridiculous noscopes as Charlie used to back in saikou!
question from Tballs:
the uk scene is at its peak for the longest that i can remember, What do you think of this upsurge of new talent to the uk scene?
It's the best I've seen the UK community in years. There are 2 top UK teams that are a threat and I think both are capable of beating most teams. There's sLip and dli who are there in the background aswell and improving but it's the most stable I've seen it for a while.
Thanks for the interview Jon, any last shoutouts?
To all the dorks who are on vent all day in volatile, the TLR lot and anyone I've played with or currently play with in the 7 years I've played this game for. Thanks ginger.
